Correspondence of Alexander Britton, 1864-1877.

Bulk of the correspondence consists of two photocopies and twelve original letters written by Union soldier Alexander Britton (1836-1899) to his wife, Clara Henriette (Ayers) Britton, between May 1864 and March 1865. The letters were written while Britton served with Company E 11th Indiana Cavalry (126th Regiment Volunteers). In the letters, Britton discusses the movement of the regiment, military strategy (with a brief description of railroad interception by opposing forces), general family matters, and health including his recovery from a gunshot wound received during the war. He also mentions daughter Lulie (Luella Britton, 1862-1946) and the birth of his son Thomas (c. 1864). Locations include Cumberland Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.; Paducah, Ky.; Louisville, Ky.; Eastport, Miss.; and Bellefonte, Ala. There is also a single letter written in 1877 from Willetsville, Ohio (now unincorported) for Brother Vail.

Alexander Britton, son of Jonah and Martha (Locke) Britton, was born 24 August 1836 Highland County, Ohio, and he died 28 August 1899 Section District, Kansas. He married 31 October 1860 in Higland County, Ohio, to Clara Henrietta Ayers (1838-1909), daughter of Nathan and Martha (Bradley) Ayres.
